How to Moderate a Deliberative Forum on Privacy

The ALA Membership Initiative Group, Libraries Fostering Civic Engagement is promoting public deliberation on the topic, "Who Do I Trust My Privacy To?"
Using a discussion guide written by members, Nancy Kranich and Carolyn Caywood, participants will examine approaches to protecting privacy that relies on three possible strategies for protecting privacy.
This workshop is for librarians and community partners who want to learn how to moderate community forums on privacy and other pressing community issues.
Is this your first time to moderate a community dialogue?
Would you like to develop your skills as a moderator and apply them at work and at home?
Do you want to learn a new way of talking about big problems?
Are you a seasoned veteran with lots of community dialogues under your belt and interested in sharing your lessons learned with others?
Do your patrons want to learn more about privacy and how to protect their privacy?
Are you personally concerned about privacy?
If so, then this workshop is for you!
This workshop will cover:
- guidelines for participants in a deliberative dialogue,
- strategies to encourage participants to weigh the costs and consequences of different approaches to managing privacy,
- the art of crafting powerful and thoughtful questions,
- tips for dealing with people who talk too much or people who don't speak up
- how to make your community conversation part of a national dialogue
This workshop will be offered online using an Elluminate virtual room. Participation is best if you have a headset with a microphone, but it is not necessary. At a minimum, you should have speakers so that you can hear the presentation. Before you attend, you might want to test your computer here.
